For the God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7

My name is Joshua Abercrombie, and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (#26918) who is passionate about helping individuals move toward wholeness and sound mind through counselling support and healing through Jesus.

A little bit about me, I exist, and have existed in several spaces. I have worked in the school system for the last 10 years as a High School Counsellor/Special Education Teacher, and have now moved on to clinical counselling and spiritual formation. I have a Bachelor of Education degree, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Fraser Valley, as well as a Master of Arts degree from Crown College, Minnesota.

I have been married for 6 years, and in the last two years have become a father of two daughters! When I am not spending time with my family, I enjoy fishing, working on house projects (depending on their difficulty level), and catching up over a Tim Hortons coffee with a friend.

Soundmind Counselling

There is a gap in our society: many individuals have a faith in Jesus but have a complicated relationship with church or spiritual community. Some need more support than what can be offered at church.

Many individuals just need a confidant who will listen without judgement, interruption, or another appointment to get to. Some individuals need help after experiencing religious abuse or conflict.

This is where Soundmind Counselling comes in. As a Therapist, I meet individuals exactly where they are at. I have no agenda and value open space where people can process sensitive content in a safe way. I value client-led conversations, and when I do lead, it is through asking questions and genuine inquiry. Exploration is done through recognizing your strengths and areas where you have already been victorious. I resolve to not fix people, but instead see change happen through supportive and honest relationship.

My greatest conviction, both professionally and personally, is that Jesus Christ is the path to healing. God has given me a career as a counsellor to help facilitate that for individuals. I am grateful to Him for his calling to this work!

Modalities

My counselling practice draws from Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, DBT and CBT. Trauma informed practice is a huge part of my work. I see how trauma can impact several aspects of an individual’s life and thus, I am non-assuming with clients, never trying to force change, but rather allowing it to happen naturally as an individual is empowered through therapeutic support.
