In a first session, I will typically ask what made you decide to come to counselling and what your goals are. Depending on your comfort level, I may camp out on your hobbies for awhile as we get to know each other. My clients find that I am easy to talk with and have good sense when a topic is not landing well. The primary goal of our first session will be to establish rapport and a direction.

People have varying degrees of faith and religion and I am very sensitive to this. While my personal worldview is that Jesus ultimately brings the healing, I also recognize that people have had potentially challenging journeys in their faith and need to set their own pace. I am open to not discussing faith at all or integrating it into the very fiber of our meetings. This can look like processing subjects through a Biblical lens and/or incorporating listening prayer. Faith integration is always optional.
