A Christian counsellor who makes room for your whole story

Meet Joshua Abercrombie, Registered Clinical Counsellor in Abbotsford

I’m Joshua Abercrombie, a Registered Clinical Counsellor supporting men, neurodivergent clients, young people and families. I bring together professional counselling, a background in education and a Christian perspective, with respect for your beliefs, experiences and goals.

Get to know me

Get to know the counsellor you’ll be working with.

You might be facing pressure at work, struggling in your relationships or trying to understand why everyday life feels harder than it seems to for others. You may know what you want to change, or simply know that something needs to be different.

I offer space to talk honestly, make sense of what you’re experiencing and consider your next steps. My approach is compassionate and practical: we’ll explore what’s happening beneath the surface while finding ways to support you in daily life.

I have a particular interest in working with men and supporting people with ADHD or autism. My experience also extends to young people and families navigating emotional, school and relationship challenges.

Education & experience

A counselling background shaped by teaching and special education.

Over a decade in schools

My experience as a high school counsellor and special education teacher shapes how I support young people, adults and families. I’ve worked with people navigating ADHD, autism, learning differences, bipolar disorder and PTSD, with attention to each person’s strengths, lived experience and support needs.

Understanding the whole person

I consider your strengths, environment, relationships and support needs. My approach respects the different ways people think, communicate and learn, with counselling tailored to your individual experience.

How we’ll work together

Strengths-based counselling led by your needs.

You may have supportive people around you and still need a dedicated space to talk things through. I offer my undivided attention, with room to explore difficult relationships, life changes and sensitive questions at your own pace.

Our conversations are led by what matters to you. I’ll listen, ask thoughtful questions and help you explore your experiences without assuming I know what they mean for you.

Together, we’ll recognise your strengths, acknowledge what you’ve already overcome and find opportunities for change. I believe a supportive, honest therapeutic relationship is an important foundation for this work.

The setting can make a difference, too. Some people find it easier to talk side by side while walking, hiking or fishing. If that appeals to you, we can explore whether an outdoor session would be a good fit.

My therapeutic approaches

My counselling draws on Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). We’ll draw on these approaches according to your needs and goals.

Trauma-informed care also shapes my work. I respect how past experiences can affect different parts of your life, and we’ll move at a pace that supports your comfort, choice and readiness.

Christian faith and counselling

Space for faith, questions and difficult experiences.

My Christian faith is central to my life and work. I believe Jesus Christ is the path to healing, and I see counselling as part of my calling to support others. For clients seeking Christian counselling, we can bring this shared foundation into conversations about challenges, relationships and personal growth.

There is also room to talk honestly about spiritual questions, religious abuse or negative church experiences. You don’t need to set those experiences aside or have your beliefs figured out before we begin.

I welcome people of all faiths or none, and I respect that your perspective may differ from mine. Whether faith is central to our conversations or something you prefer to leave outside counselling, we’ll work in a way that respects your preferences.

Outside the counselling room

Family, fishing and a coffee with a friend.

Spending time with my wife and two young daughters is my priority outside of work. Being a husband and father is an important part of my life.

When I have time to recharge, you’ll often find me fishing on the river, working on a hands-on project around the house or catching up with a friend over a Tim Hortons coffee.
